About the Artist

Amy creates functional forms that are intended to be used every day.  She feels that beautiful things should be enjoyed, being integrated into our lives.  Using a well-crafted, custom mug is a small luxury that she hopes will bring a little joy and peace to the user.

Before studying pottery, Amy worked for several years as a mechanical engineer in the combustion and flow fields.  Her experience as an engineer influences her approach to art.  Testing, which involves iterations of recording techniques and results, shapes the final outcome of her pieces.

Amy uses stoneware clay, firing to over 2000 °F for a durable finish.  Most pieces are dishwasher and microwave safe.  Each piece is formed and decorated by hand, whether on a pottery wheel or with slabs.

CRINOIDS
WORKSHOPS

In 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2020, Amy presented Crinoids In Clay at Shades State Park in Indiana, sponsored by the Indiana Arts Commission and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

Visitors learned about the ancient Crinoid fossils that are unusually abundant in the area and designed their own art tiles representing the fossils.

The potter’s craft is to create, to give form and beauty to the earth.
